The Yumi Yumi Shop invigorates with fun, colorful artwork ranging from owls and song birds to monsters and flowers. Every single print is bountiful with vibrant color combinations warm enough to turn your cheeks pink with cheer. And who can we thank for this bit of happiness in the world? Aline “Yumi” Yamada, of course.
Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, Yamada is a fine artist and illustrator who currently resides in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and little boy. She's been interested in art since childhood. "Some of my very first and most vivid memories as a child is discovering that I could with a simple pencil and paper, create something out of nothing," she says. "It held so many possibilities and joy, I still try to keep in mind that sense of discovery and awe when I feel like something is not working. I really liked telling stories with pictures when I was little."
Yamada thinks it doesn't sound like a challenge to multi-task as an artist, but when you have trouble drawing stick figures, everything about Yamada’s work screams of limitless talent. "Focusing on a few projects at a time is probably one of the most challenging problems I have. Trying to decide the direction I want to go and themes I want to explore in my illustrations is what I've been dealing with lately. It may not sound like big challenges, but when you have limited time, it becomes an issue." She doesn't appear to be struggling at all — each piece of artwork is of the best quality and looks as though she poured her heart and soul into it.
In May, Yumi Yumi will participate in a show called "La Femme" at the Nucleus Gallery in Alhambra, California. It is a show celebrating the role of mothers and femininity in our culture, and female illustrators will have created all of the artwork on display.
