Sex Bomb: Melissa Elias  Issue #25 Issue #25

The Ponys bassist talks about Kim Gordon, touring Europe, and what it’s like to work for Playboy

Ponys’ bass player Melissa Elias has been super busy lately with touring, more touring, and probably entrancing groupie boys with her graceful stage presence — though she’s too modest to admit it. Elias rides the wave of success without the slightest bit of pretension, which we find irresistible. We caught up with the Chicagoan to talk about the band’s success and knee-knocking stage jitters.

What was your job before you were the bass player for the Ponys?
I worked at Playboy as a photo researcher and coordinator. I loved the people I worked with, and every day something bizarre crossed my desk. I had to quit in spring 2004 because our touring schedule became too hectic, so now I just freelance occasionally.

The Ponys recently toured Europe. Which city was your favorite and why?
I love Groningen, in the Netherlands, which is about two hours away from Amsterdam. We always play a club called VERA, and they treat their bands incredibly well. The fans in that town are really great. They seem unaffected and they just love to see live music. All of the streets are lined with canals, and there are bikes everywhere. It's a really beautiful, inspiring town.

You exude such poise and a sense of calm when you’re onstage. Did you always have that sense about you — that comfort level?
It took a long time. I remember the first Ponys show clearly, about four years ago. I was wearing a little skirt, and my knees were quivering because I was so nervous. Then to make it worse, I got offstage and some guy told me I shouldn't wear skirts onstage. Every show you play gets easier. You learn what mind-set works for you. And I still wear skirts and dresses all the time. So screw that guy.

Do boys approach you after shows?
Yeah, usually they are just really excited about the band. It's cute.

Who’s your favorite bass player?
Kim Gordon. I've always loved Sonic Youth. I love the way she plays and carries herself. She's totally hot and has a great voice, too. We just met her at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark, and she was just as cool in
person. To me, that is huge.

What do you think about being a Venus Sex Bomb?
I can't believe I’m sharing a title with Poison Ivy. It doesn't get any better than that.
