If you want to learn the ins and outs of being a fag, then you need to enroll in Fag School. This zine, edited by Brontez, the raunchy, newest member of Gravy Train!!!!, delivers the inside scoop on gay and lesbian culture from a young perspective. Self-proclaimed as “that bitch,” Brontez lets it all hang out, very much like his stage antics at the band’s live shows.
From cover to cover, the premier issue is endlessly entertaining and informative. The first feature to check out is “Young ’n’ Hung,” a photo narrative depicting a fictional band rehearsal that goes awry. Starring Brontez as the drummer and John as the guitarist, practice quickly evolves into blowjobs, ass licking, and sex with a bottle. Two words: full frontal. The hilarious dialogue boxes really bring the story to life as well.
Other notable features include Brontez’s interview with Alvin Orloff, author of the novel Gutter Boys (a story about gay New York punks in the early ’80s), the advice column “Ask Allison [Wolfe of Bratmobile],” explicit anecdotes detailing Brontez’s sexcapades, and a step-by-step guide to being a go-go boy. Reviews of porn, books, and music, as well as interviews with Scream Club and the Husbands, are also included.
Despite my straightness, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fag School and recommend it to homos and heteros alike. My only suggestion the second issue? Get a proofreader.
