Ling Ma loves At a Crossroads

In
the middle of a quarter-life crisis, all I want to do is something
simple and no-brainer, like curl up with a nice illustrated children’s
book. New York artist Kate Williamson’s second book of illustrations, At a Crossroads: Between a Rock and My Parents’
Place, comes close without indulging in complete regression.
An
autobiographical account of Williamson’s almost two years of living at
home with her parents (on a visit that was originally supposed to last
three months), her pretty watercolor-and-ink illustrations cover the
minutiae of her circumscribed, everyday life. The ordinary nothings
become noticeably quirky and charming. We see Kate eating nachos and
champagne to celebrate New Year’s Eve, wearing away at a karaoke
machine singing Nelly Furtado songs, working on her art at her
grandmother’s house, and crushing on the college boy next door.
What happens at the end? You’ll just have to find out.
