Where can you find your one stop spot for decorating how-to’s, downloads, quizzes, gorgeous graphics, shopping guides, and project recommendations? How about orange? No not the color, the blog by Jessica Jones, How About Orange… “I started How About Orange in anticipation of opening an Etsy shop. Nearly all of the things I put in the shop got snapped up quickly, but I learned that the making, photographing, listing, and shipping of items is tedious in the extreme. I don't know how successful Etsy-ers do it. I take my hat off to them.” Instead, How About Orange has turned into a resourceful, fun, and informative website by one who is passionate about design and crafting. Jones is very enthusiastic about her findings such as other design blogs, DIY resources, furniture, artists, and of course, orange!
It is a wonder how Jones manages her day job as a graphic designer when How About Orange provides so much content to keep you busy, “I have little nanobots that I've released into the world wide web that scour the blogosphere for interesting things to post. And I run a small sweatshop in the basement where workers are always making crafty things for me.” She’s kidding! Please do not contact the Department of Labor. The truth is Jones works as a part-time freelancer at a graphic design firm, helping companies design corporate identities and marketing materials - finding what they like. How About Orange is her opportunity to share with everyone what she likes; it is playtime for her, her escape.
It’s in Jones' nature to help people, “I like sharing good ideas that I come across. It makes me happy to think someone else could benefit from them. And this way I have them all in one tidy little searchable package I can reference, so even if no one else reads my blog, it's still a good resource or reference book for myself.” Judging from the many comments her entries receive, people are reading. “I love it when people offer good ideas or tidbits of information or cool links I didn't know about. It's like having a conversation about something with a bunch of friends I've never met.”
Jones will continue to bring “visual treats and hands-on projects” to visitors, as well as supply some of her own. She recently debuted a collection of fabrics she designed called “Modern Flora” at J. Caroline Creative that can be used for bags, covers, curtains, whatever your heart desires. “I love looking at Scandinavian textiles and Danish furniture and Japanese stationery and movies with gorgeous, whimsical set designs and vintage posters and Target ads and you name it.” It looks like Jones will have plenty more material to keep How About Orange going for a long time.
