Barbara Kavovit has always been a maverick. After building her own successful construction business, she began designing a new breed of power tools that appeals to ladies who are already comfortable with their power drills and entices those who don’t know a drill bit from a Phillipshead.
Kavovit began with a mission to empower women by giving them the tools and advice to be confident and self-sufficient around projects and repairs, and she makes it über easy — her Web site (barbarak.com) features not only sets of her design-savvy, ergonomic Barbara K! tools, but also project-specific kits (roadside safety, dorm survival, and craft kits, for example) complete with directions, so it’s easy to tackle any job. There’s also a weekly featured project that gives anyone the confidence and knowledge to approach a number of ordinary repairs.
Kavovit’s recently published book of projects, Room for Improvement, further instructs newbies and veterans alike in projects, home repairs, and techniques, both basic and complex, all explained in clear and simple terms. Kavovit’s countless ideas are pictured and illustrated throughout the book, and clear directions and materials lists make the projects seem like a breeze. Previews of the beautiful results encourage would-be weekend warriors to give the projects a go.
Stick with Barbara K, and soon you’ll be able to chuck your handyman’s number — you’ll be a tool-slinging pro in your own right!
