No-sweat project
Convert an old sweatshirt into a wrap-around skirt

1. Unzip an old sweatshirt (works best if it is a zip-down).
2. Cut the sleeves off along the seam where the sleeve attaches to the body of the sweatshirt.
3. Cut one sleeve into four equal-sized, long and thin strips (about 2 inches wide).
4. Cut shoulders open, squaring off the edges.
5. Sew together three of the long, thin strips to make the belt. You can add additional stitches onto the belt for decoration.
6. Use the remaining thin strip from sleeve and sew on decorative stitches as desired.
7. Flip the sweatshirt upside-down and sew one end of long belt to the center of the new “top” of the skirt.
8. Sew short belt to the other side.
9. Cut a slit where indicated and zig-zag around the edges of the slit to create an eyelet.
10. Tie the skirt, and it’s all done!

I don't have sweatshirts (too hot in the Philippines) but it is similar to your concept. http://globalrecycledproducts.com/2008/03/24/for-ladies-only-mrs-mcgyvers-half-slip/
