skill level: freshman
total cost: $12.70 (enough to make up to four plaques)
Supplies
• one pound of plaster ($1.99)
• water
• deer plaque mold ($6 on eBay)
• old plastic shopping bag
• old shoebox
• acrylic paints (optional) (70 cents each)
• glitter (optional) ($2)
• clear gloss ($1.99)
Tools
• spray adhesive (optional) ($2.99)
• measuring cups
• plastic fork or spoon
• fast-food plastic cup
Go to it
1. Remove the lid from your shoebox and fill it to the brim with the old plastic shopping bags. Place your mold on top of the plastic bags and push down until the mold is level with the bags. This provides a stable and level surface that comes in handy when pouring the plaster.
2. Mix the plaster by follow the mixing directions that came with your plaster. (Tip: Pouring mixture into the old fast-food plastic cup and using a plastic fork to stir everything together makes for easy cleanup.)
3. Quickly pour the mixture into the mold. Do not overfill the mold. Let this mixture dry for at least 30 minutes. Remove the mold from the shoebox and turn over onto a flat surface. Gently squeeze the mold until the cast releases. Refer to plaster directions for drying times (usually 24 hours).
4. Use acrylic paint to paint the plaque. You may also use a spray adhesive on the plaque and cover with glitter for more snazz. Protect your creation with two coats of a clear gloss medium.
5. Using a strong adhesive, secure a 2-inch metal saw tooth hanger to the back of the plaque. Let dry for 10 minutes, and then your plaque is ready to hang.
