SUPPLIES
• glue and water ($2)
• old record album cover (25 cents)
• primer, glossy paint, and polyurethane (less than $10 — you only need a little)
• stool or table with a 13-inch x 13-inch top (such as Ikea’s Oddvar table, $9.99)
TOOLS
• paint brush
• stirring stick
• bowl
• newspapers (to cover the work surface)
TOTAL COST: less than $22.25
SKILL LEVEL: easy peasy
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cut off the back of the record album cover and discard.
2. Mix one part glue with one part water. With the paintbrush, spread the glue mixture over the back of the record album cover. Press the album cover to the surface of the top of the stool/table. Put something heavy on it to keep the record cover’s edges affixed to the wood, and let it dry overnight.
3. Prime all of the bare wood on the stool/table. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s directions. Then paint all of the bare wood. (Tip: To save money, buy paint at a hardware store’s reject counter. I buy quarts of paint for $2 or $3.)
4. Apply five coats of polyurethane to the top of the stool, covering the record album cover and the wood that you painted in step 3.
5. Let dry for a day and enjoy your new little table or stool.
