INSTRUCTIONS
1. Cut a piece of vinyl 14.25 inches x 7.5 inches. You can buy vinyl at the local fabric store for $6 to $8 a yard. If you want to decorate the wallet with cool stitching or buttons, now is the time to do it before you sew the flaps together.
2. Make the zipper pouch for your change. Cut the zipper and do a zigzag stitch to finish the end if you do not find a 7.5-inch zipper. Then cut the starched fabric so you have one piece that is 3 inches x 7.5 inches and another that is 3.25 inches x 7.5 inches. I find it easiest to sew the zipper to the fabric then sew the pocket together at the bottom.
3. Now you are ready to sew on the button and the flap that will hold the wallet together. 4.5 inches from the side of the vinyl, which will be the same as the change pocket side, you will sew the 4-inch strip of vinyl in the center of the 7.5-inch side. I sew two lines through the strip for reinforcement. Backstitch a couple of times on each line.
4. Then 4.25 inches in on the other end of the vinyl, you need to sew a button or attach a snap to close the wallet. Be sure to center the button on the 7.5-inch side of the vinyl and line it up with your vinyl strip.
5. Now you are ready to actually sew the wallet. Place the change pocket inside the side of the vinyl with the strip on it. You can measure 3 inches of vinyl to right below the zipper of the pouch. Pinning it to the vinyl will leave a hole, so I don’t pin it. Sew both sides of the pouch to the vinyl. You’ll notice that you now have a pocket for your credit cards behind the pouch and a place for your dollars in front of the pouch.
6. Now sew the side that will hold your checkbook. Fold the vinyl 3.25 inches in and sew the sides like you did for the side you just sewed. Then you’re done!
