Amanda Blank was holed up in a New York studio in July, working on her debut album when we drilled her about her ’90s mallrat style. The Philly-based MC got her start in Sweatheart and is most known for a flashy performance in Spank Rock’s raunchy music video “Loose.” With her fierce rapping style and showgirl attitude, Blank’s style purrs, “meow.”
MY STYLE: Shitty. I’m really into the ’80s, rocknroll stripper look. I like crop tops and animal print. I’m really into the nails, fake eyelashes, big hair, and everything sequined, sparkly, and frilly — sort of drag queen–ish. I want to look like a stripper, and I don’t know why! I’ve always been into that Kelly Bundy look.
CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT THIS ITEM OF CLOTHING: My rings and gold bracelets. Everybody’s like, “I can hear you coming because it’s like jingle-jangle everywhere.”
ONSTAGE GEAR: I tend to wear costumes just because I couldn’t really wear them on a Tuesday. I like to wear things that are a little more outlandish — the crazy jumpsuits or the leotards with the showgirl beaded collars. I’ll get up there in a fucking diaper if I have to.
MY STYLE VS. OTHER FASHIONISTA MCS: I’m way more specific. I’m always in black and animal print. I might be a little less trendy because I’m wearing the same shit I wore 10 years ago. I don’t really pay attention to their styles.
STYLE ICONS: My aunt Cindy, Tony Cocaine, the Bundy women, Tina Turner.
CLOTHING DESIGNERS: Gianni Versace, Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Cortes, Kova & T, Subi Jeans, and Balenciaga.
WHERE I SHOP: There’s this really awesome place in Philadelphia called Top Stitch — they carry handmade, custom, and stuff from local designers.
BEST COMEBACK TREND: High-waisted.
WORST FASHION FAUX PAS: Wearing a thousand trends at once. I think girls should just avoid trends and wear what looks good on them, you know? The worst thing ever is seeing a girl wearing 5-inch heels and looking uncomfortable. I’m just like, “Fuck it — just wear the flats!”
GUILTY FASHION PLEASURE: My nails because I get them like claws, filed to a point, [with] an extra pound of acrylic on them. It makes it a little difficult doing certain things, like makeup.
MY DAILY ROUTINE: Girl, I’m traaany! I wake up, I make my coffee, I get in the shower, I go back downstairs, I drink my coffee while I put on my lotion. It takes me a while to get ready, and I always end up wearing the same bullshit every day.
THE ROLE SEX PLAYS IN MY STYLE: I think it’s really important. I’m 25 years old, and I’m having a lot of sex. I’m pretty sure it’s a pretty important part in any woman’s life. I’m not trying to specifically sell sex. I think I’m a fairly sexual person. I dress a bit more provocative than, say, the other girls. I’m into dressing for the mood. I was raised by a woman who’s an “our bodies, ourselves” kind of a mom.
BEAUTY SECRET: I wrap my hair. It keeps it smooth and makes it grow faster. You blow-dry your hair, take a paddle brush, brush your hair from the top of your head, and brush your hair forward so all your hair hangs down your face and down the back. Then, slowly brush your hair around your head and wrap it around, keeping it in place with a silk scarf. Oh, and I shade-in my eyebrows. I think it makes a difference on everybody.
