JUANITA Y LOS FEOS
LABEL: none
PLAYERS:
Juanita (screams), Fa Feo (“scrappy” guitar), Angelito Feo (“mammoth”
bass), Anibal Feo (keyboards, “creaks”), Dani Feo (“road-roller” drums)
INFLUENCES: the Cramps, the Dirtbombs
SOUNDS LIKE: Garage-tinged psychedelic rock driven by propulsive, meaty guitar lines
THE LOWDOWN:
Directly translated, Juanita y Los Feos means “Juanita and the Ugly
Ones.” Their song “Pegame En La Disco” was included on a 7-inch in the
zine Bang! #6, and two official releases are due this fall. The first is a four-song studio recording called Robot Gigante Avanzando (“Advancing Giant Robot”) to be released by the band and the label Gramaciones Grabofonicas. The second, Mammoth Rock,
features tracks recorded on cassette during rehearsals and will come
out on French label Sentenza Records. Angelito and Anibal also design
posters, flyers, and Web sites under the name La Camorra.

HELLO CUCA
LABEL: Rompepistas/gojonnygogogogo
PLAYERS: Lidia Damunt (vocals, guitar), Mabel Damunt (bass), Alfonso Melero (drums)
INFLUENCES: Liliput, Pixies
SOUNDS LIKE: Strutting rocknroll underscored with surfy garage rock and edged with the hapless ferocity of riot grrrl
THE LOWDOWN: This trio from Murcia, Spain, has accrued a notable fan base comprised of DIY indie-rock luminaries like Calvin Johnson and Ian Svenonius. The band’s full-length album, Gran Sur, is out now on their own label, Rompepistas, in Spain and on the Leeds, England–based label gojonnygogogogo in the U.K. Damunt also runs the feminist e-mail list Fempunk, which inspired a zine of the same name. LAS PULPAS
LABEL: none
PLAYERS: Ochi Reyes (vocals), Emma Sueca (vocals), Ana Alcazar (bass), Aurora Garcia (drums), Sonia Marti (keyboard), Ros Murray (guitar)
INFLUENCES: Le Tigre, Au Pairs
SOUNDS LIKE: Lo-fi ’60s-inspired garage pop in the vein of early Shonen Knife
THE LOWDOWN: Las Pulpas began as an idea hatched by friends Marti, Garcia, and Reyes while at a show in London’s Bethnal Green district. Murray is the bassist for Electrelane, and many other members have been in bands before: Reyes sang in Ochiqueochenta, Marti played in Alicante, Spain–based band Metodo Milton, and Alcazar’s previous project was called Ana y Yo. Las Pulpas debuted at the 2005 Ladyfest Madrid and have since recorded a song for the label Tragadiscos as well as a three-song demo, a live CD, and a DVD.
