Ah, the life of a rock star. Jammin’ ‘til 8 a.m. and sleepin’ ‘til 4 p.m. — that’s how Chicago-based garage band Suffrajett gets back to work after the holidays. Vocalist and songwriter Simi spent two weeks in her hometown of Woodstock, New York, celebrating Christmas and Hanukah, hanging with her mom, and reading whatever books she found lying around. Now it’s time to hit the road again, which means practice, practice, practice. Suffrajett’s current self-titled EP features four fuzzy hard-rock tracks and one ballad, serving as a preview to its sophomore full-length slated for April 2006 release. Before heading out on tour, Simi spoke with Venus over a pancake breakfast.
BOOB TUBE: When I get a chance, I like to watch crime shows, like Forensic Files on Court TV and A&E.
MOVIES: I rent movies. I don’t get to go to the movies a lot because we don’t really have any money. I went to see Brokeback Mountain when I was in Woodstock with my mom.
LISTENS: We listened to PJ Harvey’s To Bring You My Love last night, over and over. Queens Of the Stone Age.
READS: I read all the time. I had nothing to read at my mom’s, so I read Charlotte’s Web. I also like Night by Elie Wiesel, about the Holocaust; A Child Called “It”; and Nico. I’m embarrassed about the book I’m reading right now: Danielle Steel’s The House On Hope Street. I’ve read some heavy shit in the past couple weeks, so I’m ready for some bullshit.
MAGS: I like to read crap magazines like Us Weekly. Maybe Vogue once in a while and Rolling Stone. Those are the three magazines I read for some reason. All of the other ones don’t interest me.
BROWSES: I don’t [go on the Internet] because I don’t have a computer. I wish I did.
SHOPS: Shopping’s hard for me. It’s not part of my lifestyle. A lot of my clothes are given to me by friends or just found at some random awesome shop.
HANGOUTS: Cool bars where my friends hang out. We go to Liar’s Club and Estelle’s in Chicago a lot. Any bar that’s open late.
EATS: I like to make tofu and vegetables, and I really like Chinese food.
HOBBIES: I guess socializing. That’s what I do in my free time.
