It’s an old story. Three sisters and a brother recruit a neighborhood friend and start playing music together. The quintet becomes the house band for their parents’ coffee shop and all-ages show venue. They get signed to a major label and open for bands like A New Found Glory, Hot Hot Heat, and Wilco — and the group’s average age is 20.
At least, that’s how it went for the Tyler, Texas–based group Eisley. Alternating between songs written by 17-year-old Stacey DuPree (who penned her first tune at age 8) and 22-year-old sister Sherri, their debut full-length, Room Noises, is a collection of sprawling country-flavored art rock. With angelic voices, haunting harmonies, complex song-structures, and intuitive storytelling, Eisley sounds like the Carpenters covering early Heart. Before heading out on another tour, Stacey reveals how she spends her downtime over a cup of French vanilla black tea.
BOOB TUBE: My television set has been shut off since we started doing music (eight years ago). When I think of the phrase “television show,” I think of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? That was so bad. But that’s the only one I can think of. That and Wheel Of Fortune. Now that one I liked.
MOVIES:The Brothers Grimm, Corpse Bride. What would we do without Tim Burton?
LISTENS: I’ve been listening to a lot of Shania Twain. Yes, you heard me. I am in love with her. She is such a real woman. Song: “Heart Of Gold” by Neil Young.
READS:Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger. I can’t help but relate to Franny in this book.
MAGS: Any magazine filled with lots of great photography and people who I admire.
BROWSES: Online dictionaries and Google!
SHOPS: I don’t shop. I’m poor. But I like stores such as Banana Republic, Anthropologie, Whole Foods Market, Borders, and Sephora.
HANGOUTS: In my house or at Starbucks.
EATS: My favorite food is cereal (anything with dried fruit) and soy milk. And my favorite restaurant is Olive Garden.
HOBBIES: Yoga, baking stuff, cleaning my kitchen, writing
