Being sexy isn’t simply about looks — it’s a state of mind. And MC Mr. Lif is proof. His razor-sharp wit, lyrical gymnastics, and storytelling ability helped bring political hip-hop to a new level, but this rapper has a softer side as well.
As one-third of the Perceptionists (with MC Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One), Mr. Lif waxes romantic on two tracks, “Love Letters” and “Breathe In the Sun,” the latter of which deals with the difficulties of leaving love behind. “I’ve had nothing but long-distance relationships my whole adult life,” he says from his home in Philadelphia, where he recently relocated after living in Boston for 12 years. “It’s always been a bit of a trial.”
Friends, cheaper living, and a certain lady contributed to his move, showing that the 30-year-old is ready to settle down. “I’m an eight-year veteran in this industry now, and all the starry-eyed young boy shit is completely out of my system,” he says, laughing. “Now I’m on some mature, grown-man shit and focusing on building a future for myself and just making sure I got a nice little real-estate portfolio cracking. I make sure my homes are well decorated and that I’m eating well and exercising and trying to write some good music.”
He’s currently working on his next solo album, to be released spring 2006. “It’s probably fitting for the ‘Sex Bomb’ article that I have a pretty racy song on there, far racier than I’ve ever done,” he says. “It plays a lot on the sexual tension of two lovers who haven’t seen each other for a long time, and they’re in kind of an inopportune situation where they can’t be alone right off the bat.” But don’t expect a video with scantily clad honeys shakin’ their booties. “There’s just a lot classier way to display your sex appeal,” Mr. Lif says. “And a lot of the time it’s the stuff you don’t see that’s the biggest turn-on.”
