Since 2001, Sonicbids.com has offered services to independent musicians — for about $6 a month they can create a profile on the site as an advertising tool to reach a number of publications and promoters.
As of late 2007, music fans can get in on the action, too. For any denomination you want, you can send a gift certificate to a band with a Sonicbids profile. “There are over 12,000 promoters, events, festivals, and contests that work with Sonicbids around the world,” says publicist Ted Miller, citing Mid-Atlantic Music Conference, Popfest, Billboard Song Contest, and the Independent Music Awards as examples.
The gift certificates directly address emerging bands’ most pressing needs; musicians can use them toward entry or membership fees to contests and festivals. If your favorite band can’t live off CD sales alone — or, for that matter, if you can’t — the gift certificates allow fans to alleviate financial stress, so the bands can focus on the music.
