Six Songs (Ulrike)

Six Songs EP sold out via word of mouth and tour sales. It is filled with intimate lyrical yarns spun by the subtle delivery of Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, and music by Riggs and musical partner Aaron Victor Morgan. The soft, slow but lilting tracks comprised solely of guitar and bass are stripped down to their bare minimum to best showcase the basic approach to songwriting and Riggs’ soothing vocals. Songs like “The Road” feature the heartwarming lyrics: “The road is wishing me away / Before I’m gone I’d like for all my friends to join up with me in song.” The simplicity and minimal production leave nothing to hide. There are no effects to distract from the pure distilled folk-inspired modern songwriting. The brown and black cardboard packaging is augmented with linocut artwork by Riggs, and was recorded by Morgan’s father. The vinyl version includes a bonus track.

This is the sort of album perfect for a starry night’s personal reflection around the warm dancing flames of a campfire. It’s earthy, honest, and homegrown, which can be rare in today’s music scene if not sought after with diligence. Fans of folky pop such similar to Mirah and Vashti Bunyan should enjoy this EP and can expect a full-length album in late ‘06 or early 2007.
