Orba Squara

Sunshyness (Res Freq)

In the same way Leslie Feist's "1 2 3 4" will forever be enmeshed with the iPod Nano, Orba Squara’s "Perfect Timing (This Morning)" has become instantly ring-a-bell-able for its use in those iPhone commercials.

But enough said about commercialism and i-whatevers. Orba Squara's multi-instrumentalist Mitch Davis should rightly be the center of this music review. His album, Sunshyness, features 10 tracks of lovely acoustic, sit-by-the-riverbank-with-no-shoes guitar playing. No dramatic technology, no competitive over-reaching vocals — just Davis and his soft-spoken tenor leading through melodies as gentle and sweet as September sunshine.

Davis could be sickeningly sweet with his chiming glockenspiels, yet the softly shh-ing percussion politely invites the listener to please come in — he's much too charming to resist. For instance, in the song that's made him famous, he sings, "It was the perfect timing / Because tomorrow is the perfect morning / Every morning," leaving only the happy feeling and comfort of a warm, fuzzy blanket. Just. One. More. Minute.
