Rosie Thomas’ fourth album, These Friends of Mine, was, fittingly, inspired and made with a little help from her friends, namely Denison Witmer and indie golden boy Sufjan Stevens. In fact, Stevens co-wrote “Why Waste More Time,” recorded the tune with Thomas in his kitchen, and appears again on “Say Hello.”
These Friends of Mine was lost in the world of studio clocks and label deadlines. It was made as a reminder that making music with friends is a wonderful job, though the year or two of retail servitude might have served as a reminder that music is made for others. Ultimately, Thomas’ singer-songwriter folk project conveys the excitement and ease of jamming with friends, but lacks both musical and lyrical urgency.
“The One I Love,” though well arranged, comes across like a Valium-hazed, adult-contemporary number without the bite and bitterness R.E.M.’s lyrics imply. However, stand out “Paper Doll,” written by Witmer, incorporates the well-matched vocals of Jeremy Enigk, delicately conveying the creeping doubts of self-identity and empowerment within the confines of a romantic relationship. The closing title track, with its layered vocals and lush strings, serves as a fine and earnest tribute to those who inspired the album.
The album’s packaging with its personal stories and quaint drawings is a reminder that, while portable, music on an iPod lacks the personality and intimacy of the more organic CD or vinyl.
