Perhaps the most comparative band to Chicago’s husband-wife duo the Like Young would be former tour partners Mates of State. But in all fairness, the Like Young procure their own brand of lovely, rocking marital tunes on its debut release for Polyvinyl.
Comparisons aside, the duo’s third album is a pure gem, full of competing vocals, mesmerizing guitar lines, and heart-pounding drumming. Somehow, with only two instruments and two distinct voices, Amanda and Joe Ziemba create rock songs that are insanely melodic yet never sappy. Joe sings the majority of the leads in his raspy, yet sexy Rivers Cuomo-like voice, while Amanda’s cute vocals are a perfect accompaniment, and an even better central point on tracks such as “Writhe Like You Mean It” and “Inner Fantasies.”
The Like Young are refined, perhaps due to the fact that its members have been playing together in various forms since 1997. After sacrificing jobs and a house for life on the road in 2004, the common reality hit that being an indie band doesn’t pay the bills. So, it’s a damn good thing that Polyvinyl signed the band in 2005, creating more stability for them to create the songs on Last Secrets. And it’s a fabulous thing that their secret’s out.
