Five Sunsets in Four Days (Too Pure)

Formed in L.A. by Katie Eastburn, Jeff Rosenberg, and Jarrett Silberman, Young People released their first, self-titled album in 2002 on 5 Rue Christine, following it up with War Prayers off Dim Mak the next year. The Five Sunsets in Four Days EP is the band’s last recording before guitarist Rosenberg’s departure left just two Young People to share the instrumental duties.

The most exciting elements of this six-song disc are the drumming — especially on “The Mountain,” which is driven by a grippingly simple beat — and Eastburn’s clear, comforting vocals (see “Stay Awake” and “Sudden Fear”). The entire production has a very immediate sound, as if Young People toted their gear into your living room to play a show just for you. Fans of intimate indie rock can catch the real thing as Eastburn and Silberman tour with two other musicians; they’ll release a full-length album in early 2006.
