Ever wonder what the soundtrack to a mustachio-ed '80s rebel cop film would sound like? Well, Maserati does. And that's what Inventions For the New Season, the instrumental quartet's first album in four years, is. The record is so expansive it begs to be described in cinematic rather than sonic terms since it sounds like something written specifically for a Michael Mann or even a Patrick Swayze justice movie than a real studio album. From start to finish, each of the eight songs
sets the scene for a neon-light drenched city scene of cops sliding over muscle car hoods to collar a suspect to a drug deal gone bad.
The record starts off with "Inventions," a 9-plus minute song of delayed, pulsating guitars that constantly repeat and meld together to create a trance-like state Steve Reich would be proud of, until the drums and bass kick in at the 6-minute mark to give it a steady rolling dance floor groove. Giving way to the eerie hooks of "12:16," the song sounds like search choppers hovering overhead in the night.
But even with swashes of guitars and galloping drums, the band always brings it back to the discotheque even if it’s nearing the heavy metal realm with "Show Me The Season" by having the bass take the lead or adding a bongo breakdown on the tail end of "Synchronicity IV."
Put simply, this is the soundtrack to a brawl on the dance floor.
