Myth Takes (Warp)

On their third disc Myth Takes, !!! (for any chick living under a rock, pronounced Chk Chk Chk) skirts even closer to a techno and house sound — albeit with their undeniable raucous punk underpinnings. Only this time, !!!’s eight members are looking to craft anthems that fall within a more traditional pop song structure (most tracks barely stretch past five minutes). In fact, only the feverish “Bend Over Beethoven” slithers to that nearly inscrutable ten-minute mark of changing speeds and rhythms that has become a hallmark of house music.
Once again this Brooklyn collective makes the hipsters want to dance and shimmy their hips with abandon. They can meld RnB vocals from featured guest singer Shannon Funchess with searing post-punk bass lines (“Heart of Hearts”) or combine ominous New Wave keyboards and vocals with surf rock (“Myth Takes”) — all without loosing the groove. Sure, the lyrics contain lame couplets (check “Must Be the Moon” and it’s opening lines of “One drink, two drinks, three drinks four / She had eyes I couldn’t ignore so I chatted her up out on the dance floor / She was out of cigarettes so I walked her to the store), but who cares when such mindlessness works so well with the pulsating beats that you want to loose yourself in. Be sure to listen for “All My Heroes Are Weirdos” as the track is as near to perfect electro-punk as a song can achieve. It’s a rave gone mad with relentless drums, endless motion, and a forbidding wall of sound.
