Remember that saying coined by Cervantes that goes something like, “Tell me what company you keep and I’ll tell you what you are”? If you haven’t heard Swedish quintet the Sounds yet, you’ll get the gist of what they’re about when I tell you they’ve just scored a European tour with Fall Out Boy and a three-month stint in the U.S. with No Doubt.
Their third album, Crossing the Rubicon, comes crashing in on the New Wave sound so many of the Hot Topic–wearing teenagers are currently crushing on — a bit ironic since most weren’t even born during the rise of the Cars, Blondie, Depeche Mode, or the other bands that the Sounds emulate. While lead singer Maja Ivarsson’s voice has a bold, “don’t mess with me” attitude à la Deborah Harry, Crossing’s uninspired lyrics and lack of originality may ring better with those who wouldn’t know what to do with an LP.
