Liarbird

Superba Menura (Self-released)

This is the sound of the night fluttering around with the leaves, soft whispers of sound contemplating their next move. The upright bass, the violin, the two guitars, the percussion, and the vocalists all fuse themselves together to move as one -- to sort of find themselves in the dark. Superba Menura is melodic folk/pop at its most creative level. When musicians actually work together (egos aside, of course) it is possible to create something beautiful.

Over a late rainy night five people found themselves together and called themselves Liarbird. Vocalists Nora Danielson and Kanako Wynkoop carry mellow urgency through their voices, ones that speak right to the heart of the matter: "Start wars for peace it just doesn't make sense / Lord they're opposites / Take a look at yourself you big hypocrite, Mr. President / There may be missiles and bombs blowing weddings by now / There may be missiles and bombs killing in your name." Opposition to the war among musicians has been brewing since the August 2002 release of Sleater-Kinney's One Beat and it continues on this album, but in a different form. Superba Menura is a piece of poetry that lays itself out for us to observe, think, and then act. It will move you, and isn't that what music should do these days?
