Reader of the Week: Josie Outlaw of Philadelphia

owner of Red Letter Girl Cosmetics

Why did you start your company?
I got the idea for Red Letter Girl when I was on the road with my band, the A.K.A.s. With a background in cosmetology and experience working for well-known cosmetics companies, I was becoming discouraged when more and more big lines were marketing "edgy" looks that were designed by those who were outside of the culture. When I was on the road, I decided I wanted to create something for like-minded ladies.

How’d you get the name Red Letter Girl?
It comes from one of my favorite movies, Pump Up the Volume. Red Letter Girl is the name that Mark Hunter [Christian Slater] in the movie uses to describe the girl who writes passionate letters to him on red paper.

How did your background as a musician influence your makeup?
Being a musician, you are always out there trying to get your point of view across. The A.K.A.s have a very close relationship with PETA — 4 out of 5 of us are vegetarian. We also worked with Carbon Conscious Consumer to promote their "Bring your own bag" campaign. Also, I chose to use products that are not tested on animals and have eco-friendly packaging.

I wanted to also use Red Letter Girl as another way to create something fun that would tie in with other things that I feel strongly about. I wanted to create a line that captured the spirit of women who want to be heard.
